From Paes to Bopanna: Indians who have won titles at Australian Open
The Australian Open 2025 is set to get underway from January 12 at Melbourne Park which will see a number of Indians in the fray.
Historically, it has been the doubles category in which the Indian tennis players have found glory at the Slam Down Under.
Olympic bronze medallist Leander Paes and his mixed doubles partner, USA’s Martina Navratilova, clinched the Australian Open title in 2003. It was the first time that an Indian triumphed in Melbourne.
The likes of Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza have also tasted success in Melbourne. Together, they won the mixed doubles title in 2009.
Last year, Rohan Bopanna and his former partner Matthew Ebden won the men’s doubles title.
Overall, four Indians have won a total of seven titles – either together or with foreign partners – out of which Paes has four to his name in Melbourne.
Leander Paes – 4 (three in mixed doubles with Navratilova [2003], Cara Black [2010], Martina Hingis [2015]; one in men’s doubles with Radek Stepanek [2012])
Mahesh Bhupathi – 2 (in mixed doubles with Hingis [2006], Mirza [2009])
Sania Mirza – 2 (one in mixed doubles with Bhupathi [2009], one in women’s doubles with Hingis [2016])
Rohan Bopanna – 1 (in men’s doubles with Matthew Ebden [2024])
