Women’s Ashes: Australia beats England by four wickets in 1st W-ODI

Australia drew first blood and collected two points in the Women’s Ashes 2025 with a six-wicket victory over England in the first Women’s ODI at the North Sydney Oval on Sunday.

The coin flip favoured Australia skipper Alyssa Healy who inserted England. Despite losing just one wicket in the first PowerPlay and a 50-run second-wicket association between Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, England could only post 204 on the board.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge (38 off 52) and Amy Jones (31 off 30) put up the second 50-run stand of the innings for the sixth wicket but the vistor eventually bundled out inside 44 overs.

Ashleigh Gardner was the pick of the bowlers with her 3/19 while Kim Garth, Annabel Sutherland and Alana King claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Australia lost Phoebe Litchfield to Lauren Filer in the second over. But Healy’s 70 off 78, put together with a run-a-ball 28 from Beth Mooney and Garnder’s unbeaten 44-ball 42 got the home side over the line in the 39th over.

Australia claimed the first two points in the Women’s Ashes and the sides will meet for the second ODI in Melbourne on Tuesday.
