PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty will spearhead the country’s challenge at the India Open Super 750 starting January 14 with India fielding its largest-ever contingent in the competition.
A total of 21 Indian players, including three men’s singles, four women’s singles, two men’s doubles, eight women’s doubles, and four mixed doubles pairs, will compete in the BWF World Tour event.
Eight of the top 10 men in the world, including the medallists at the Paris Olympics, will be in action with World No. 1 Shi Yuqi, Indonesian Jonatan Christie and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen topping the seedings in the men’s singles.
While Lakshya, who won here in 2022, will likely run into 5th seed Li Shi Feng in the second round, he will first have to get past another Chinese challenge in Weng Hong Yang in the opening round, against whom he has a 3-3 record.
HS Prannoy will be up against Christie in Round 2 and Priyanshu Rajawat will face Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the opening match.
Among the women, 14 of the top 20 have confirmed participation including Olympic champion and World No. 1 An Se Young of Korea and bronze medallist Gregoria Marisa Tunjung of Indonesia.
With Sindhu returning to competition after her marriage, drawn against compatriot Anupama Upadhyaya, at least one Indian is confirmed in the second round but it won’t be as easy for Malvika Bansod and Aakarshi Kashyap.
Shetty and Rankireddy currently participating in the Malaysia Open, will also be looking to regain their top position in the world ranking, opening their campaign against the Malaysian pair of Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee.
