Lyon to review fan violence after French Cup exit to fifth-tier team
French club Olympique Lyonnais will review footage of violence by its supporters after the Ligue 1 club was eliminated from the French Cup last 32 by amateurs Bourgoin-Jallieu on Wednesday.
Bourgoin fans invaded the pitch after the fifth-tier team won on penalties. Lyon supporters also rushed into the field where fights broke between the two sets.
After the incident, club OL director general Laurent Prud’homme condemned the act and expressed his views on social media.
“OL does not tolerate any violence from its supporters.
“We are contacting Bourgoin to view the images, take the necessary measures and identify the perpetrators of this violence, whether verbal, physical or racist,” he wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Earlier last year on October 29, Lyon’s league match at Marseille was called off after Lyon’s team bus was pelted with stones, injuring coach Fabio Grosso, since been replaced, as the players made their way to the Stade Velodrome.
Lyon fans were banned from travelling to the rescheduled game at Olympique de Marseille by the French Interior Ministry due to the risk of serious confrontation between supporters.
