IND vs ENG: India team selection eludes Karun Nair despite brilliant form in Vijay Hazare Trophy
A spot in India’s One Day International (ODI) team eluded Karun Nair despite his dream run with the willow in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
So far, the right-hand batter has scored a whopping 752 runs from seven innings at an average of 752, including five centuries and a half-century, and guided Vidarbha to the Vijay Hazare Trophy final.
While his name did come up during the team selection, he missed out on a spot for India’s home ODI series against England.
However, the chairman of the national selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, admitted that Nair could be considered later if any batter gets injured.
“Those are really special performances as someone averages 750 plus or something! We did have a chat about him, there’s no doubt about it. But at the moment, finding a spot in this team is very difficult. Look at the guys who’ve been picked. All of them average in excess of mid-40s, so unfortunately, you can’t fit everyone in. It’s a squad of 15. But those performances certainly make you take notice,” Agarkar said.
“And if tomorrow, there is a loss of form or injuries, there will certainly be a conversation around him…”
Nair, 33, played six Tests and two ODIs for India. However, despite scoring a triple century in a Test against England at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in December 2016, he has not been part of the national team for almost eight years.
