ISL 2024-25: FC Goa looks to beat East Bengal with top-two up for grabs in second half of league

FC Goa will look to return to second in the Indian Super League (ISL) standings as it hosts East Bengal in their league match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.

The Gaurs are third in the table with 27 points from 15 games, having played three draws in their last five matches. Meanwhile, East Bengal FC is 11th in the standings, as it has 14 points from 15 clashes.

Jamshedpur FC beat them to the second spot after their 1-1 draw against the Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Manolo Marquez’s boys will be looking to reclaim it in order to keep alive their ambitions of finishing the league stages at the top of the rankings.

“Every game is very tough. We are in a moment where collecting points is very difficult. But, this is football. We need to be focused on ourselves,” Marquez said.

East Bengal, on the other hand, has won twice in their last five matches but it has lost two games on the trot. It also has produced the least goal-scoring chances in the league (126) and trails Goa by 26 chances in that aspect.

“The team is slowly getting better. We need to find the foundation that allows us to have an idea of what East Bengal FC has always been and what we need to do moving forward,” Oscar Bruzon, East Bengal’s head coach said.

The two teams have played nine games, with FC Goa winning six times and two matches resulting in a draw. East Bengal FC have emerged victorious only once.

The game is scheduled for a 7:30 pm kick-off.
