Rohit Sharma aims to bring Champions Trophy to Wankhede
India’s ODI and Test skipper Rohit Sharma has expressed his desire to bring the Champions Trophy back to the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
Speaking at a function hosted by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to celebrate 50 years of the stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, Rohit shared his aspirations for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
“We will try our best… I’m sure that the wishes of 140 crore Indians will be behind us when we land in Dubai for the Champions Trophy. We will try to do well and bring the Champions Trophy 2025 to the Wankhede Stadium,” Rohit said.
The chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, along with Rohit announced the 15-player squad on Saturday for the Champions Trophy, where Shubman Gill was named vice-captain.
The Champions Trophy 2025 will feature the top eight teams — India, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, Afghanistan, England, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. India will play all its matches in Dubai, while the rest of the tournament will take place in Pakistan and the UAE.
Earlier, as part of the celebrations, MCA also felicitated former India internationals, including Sunil Gavaskar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Karsan Ghavri, Ajinkya Rahane, and Prithvi Shaw. Additionally, on January 15, eight surviving members of the first-ever first-class match played at the Wankhede Stadium were honoured.
