HIL an excellent platform for practical demonstration, says FIH educator Marriott during Indian coaches training

After conducting three International Hockey Federation (FIH) Level-2 courses alongside the Hockey India League (HIL) at the Birsa Munda Stadium here, FIH Academy Educator Chris Marriott said the league served as an excellent platform providing scope for practical demonstration.

As Hockey India (HI) chose to invite an FIH Educator to conduct courses for Indian coaches, Marriott and three others, National women’s team coach Harendra Singh, former international Vikram Kanth and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) coach Rajdeep Singh, imparted training to 54 coaches – including former international players P.R. Sreejesh, Bharat Chettri and Poonam Rani.

“It’s very sensible and incredible that HI has brought their pathways into line with the FIH…There’s a buzz around the HIL. It adds a certain level of excitement to it. We’ve used the matches that have been going on in the evenings as learning opportunities. They’ve had some tasks to do around watching matches, presenting information back to us about what they’ve seen. So developing their understanding of the game, but also their ability to analyse information, make sense of it and then present it back,” said Marriott.

According to Marriott, the educators gave the participating coaches “lots to go away and think about” and two-time Olympic bronze medallist goalkeeper Sreejesh, currently coaching the National junior side, said there was so much that he could take away even though he’s coaching at a high level.

“Everyone was with the feedback, that it was a great learning,” said Marriott.
