Bengaluru man who was part of a clinical trial dies, brother blames R&D firm
A 33-year-old Nagesh Veeranna, who was part of a medicine trial carried out by a Research and Development (R&D) firm in the city, was found dead at his brother’s residence in Jalahalli on Wednesday morning. His brother Revanasiddappa has alleged that he died of the side effects of the medicines that were tried on him by an Electronics City based R&D firm Syngene International.
In his complaint, Revanasiddappa, who works as a driver, said that his brother did not have any health issues before becoming part of the clinical trials carried out by Syngene International. He said in December 2024, his brother had been admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital and the company had called him to rush to the hospital.
He claimed that his brother told him that he had developed stomach aches after taking tablets and injections by the company as part of the trial. However, he recovered and since then has been residing with his brother in Jalahalli. His brother said Nagesh had been regularly visiting the company to get his health tested, the complaint said.
On Tuesday night, the duo had dinner and slept. Revanasiddappa said he couldn’t wake up his Nagesh on Wednesday morning and called the doctor from the R&D firm, who asked him to rush Nagesh to the same hospital where he was earlier treated at an ICU. At the hospital, the doctors declared him “brought dead”.
Jalahalli Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are further probing the case.
In a statement, Syngene International said: “An individual, who participated in a clinical trial in one of the pharmacokinetic studies in early December, passed away due to a sudden medical event, at his residence. We are following all clinical trial protocols and have reported to the relevant authorities. Our deepest condolences to the family. We are extending full support to the family and the authorities for the investigations”.
