Jasprit Bumrah named ICC cricketer of the year 2024
India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been honoured with the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for men’s cricketer of the year, the International Cricket Council announced at the ICC awards on Tuesday.
Bumrah topped the bowling charts, claiming 71 wickets during the calendar year.
The pacer overcame fellow nominees Travis Head, Joe Root and Harry Brook to the title and is the fifth recipient of the award from India, after Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016) and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).
Earlier, he was also named the ICC Test cricketer of the year on Monday.
He was also part of the ICC Test team of the year along with his countrymates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja, a side led by Australia’s Pat Cummins.
The 31-year-old averaged just 14.92 per wicket and ended 2024 with a strike rate of just 30.1. During India’s tour of Australia, Bumrah also completed his 200 Test wickets and became the only bowler with a minimum of 200 dismissals to have an average less than 20 (19.4).
During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the pacer finished with 32 wickets in five Tests and was adjudged Player of the Series. Earlier in the year, Bumrah got 19 wickets during England’s five-match Test tour of India.
