ISL 2024-25: Subhasish, Manvir find the net as Mohun Bagan downs city-rival Mohammedan SC

Mohun Bagan Super Giant strengthened its position on top of the current standings with a 4-0 win over its city rival Mohammedan Sporting, in an Indian Super League 2024-25 fixture at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday.

Left-back Subhasish Bose and winger Manvir Singh shared the four goals for Mohun Bagan which increased its stock to 43 points from 19 matches to go 10 points clear of its nearest challenger FC Goa.

The Fatorda-based side has played two matches less in comparison and will be meeting the third-placed Jamshedpur FC (31 from 17) in a crucial match on Sunday. Mohammedan continued at the bottom with 11 points from 18 matches.

The Mariners started with the right intent and secured the lead in the 12th minute following a corner when Subhasish picked up a pass from his defensive colleague Dippendu Biswas with his left foot, kept his balance well and finished with his right foot. Mohun Bagan doubled its lead off another corner in the 20th minute when Manvir headed home Jason Cummings’ flag-kick.

Subhasish extended Bagan’s lead to 3-0 off a 43rd minute free-kick, when Jamie Maclaren flicked Cummings’ long delivery to set him up with the opportunity. Mohammedan Sporting was reduced to 10 men during first half’s injury-time (45+4th minute) when its Uzbek midfielder Mirjalol Kasimov was sent off for kicking the Mohun Bagan defender Tom Aldred.

Manvir Singh found his second and Mohun Bagan’s fourth in the 53rd minute when he diverted home a cross from Cummings with another headed goal.
