IND vs ENG, 1st ODI: No ‘toxic competition’ between ‘childhood friends’ Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma

IND vs ENG, 1st ODI: No ‘toxic competition’ between ‘childhood friends’ Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma

Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma have been childhood friends. And now, as they both shine bright in India colours, the former makes it clear that there is no ‘competition’ between them, despite both contending for spots in the top-order.

Abhishek smashed the second-fastest T20I century for India at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, reaching the three-digit mark in just 37 balls. With Abhishek and Yashasvi Jaiswal around, there’s healthy competition for those the coveted opening spots.

However, Gill downplayed the issue, saying: “Abhishek is a childhood of friend of mine. Jaiswal is also a friend, I don’t think there is any toxic competition between us,” he said.

“Obviously, if you are playing for the country, you want to perform in every match. There’s no such thing like ‘I wish this guy doesn’t perform’. You are playing for the country and for the team and whosoever performs you congratulate them,” Gill, who is now the vice-captain of the team, said.
