ISL 2024-25: Former Mohun Bagan defender Sumit Rathi joins NorthEast United FC
NorthEast United FC announced the signing of defender Sumit Rathi on a free transfer for the remainder of the Indian Super League (ISL 2024-25) season.
“I’m thrilled to join NorthEast United FC. The club has a rich footballing history and a passionate fanbase, creating an ideal environment for any player. The club’s vision and project resonated with me, and after speaking with the management, I felt this was the right move for my career. I can’t wait to play in front of the incredible NEUFC fans,” he expressed.
Sumit, 23, is a versatile defender capable of playing both centre-back and left-back. The India U-23 international began his career with the AIFF U-18s before moving to Indian Arrows in 2017. He has played for ATK and Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the past, where he won two ISL Championships, the ISL League Shield, and the Durand Cup.
The player was also named Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s captain for a promotional derby match against East Bengal which was held in Lucknow last year in September.
“Sumit is a talented centre-back who also offers versatility at left-back. His strong left foot and significant experience for his age make him a valuable asset. His ability to play multiple positions is crucial for our squad, and he will undoubtedly strengthen our team,” Juan Pedro Benali, head coach of NorthEast United FC shared.
