WPL 2025: Ashleigh Gardner replaces Beth Mooney as Gujarat Giants captain

Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been appointed captain of Gujarat Giants for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. Gardner has been a vital part of the Giants since the league’s inception. Over the last two seasons, she has made 324 runs and claimed 17 wickets.

A two-time Belinda Clark Award winner, Gardner played a crucial role in Australia’s gold medal triumph at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and was named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 T20 World Cup in South Africa.

Expressing her excitement about the new role, Gardner said, “It’s an absolute honour to captain Gujarat Giants. I have loved being part of this team, and I’m eager to lead this fantastic group. We have a great mix of youth and experience, along with immense Indian talent. I look forward to working with the squad and making our fans proud.”

Head coach Michael Klinger praised Gardner’s leadership qualities, calling her a “fierce competitor” with strong tactical acumen. “Her ability to inspire and guide players makes her the ideal choice. We believe she will lead from the front,” he said.

Beth Mooney, who captained the team last season, will now focus on her role as wicketkeeper and opening batter.
