The Champions League draw begins:

Giovane Elber, a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich in 2001, arrives on stage to help in the draw as he we edge closer to the draw for the round of 16.

He says he feels Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the favourites to lift the title.

Giorgio Marchetti, the Deputy Secretary General of UEFA, takes the stage to begin the draw. Following are the main groupings:

Liverpool and Barcelona, Arsenal and Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen and, Lille and Aston Villa.

The stage is set and the auditorium looks full as officials of all the 16 clubs sit impatiently to know their opponents in the pre-quarterfinals.

Since this edition of the UEFA Champions League is being played under a new format, the draw for the round of 16 will also happen differently.

Following is the process for the draw:

The following teams secured qualification in the pre-quarterfinals by winning the two-legged playoffs on aggregate:

Bayern Munich, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, Feyenoord, Paris Saint-Germain, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid

The following teams secured qualification by finishing in the top eight of the league phase:

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, Lille, Liverpool

The 2024-25 edition of the UEFA Champions League has reached the round of 16 stages, with half of them finalised after the knockout playoffs that ended on February 19.

This season’s Champions League is being played under a new format, wherein the group stages have been replaced by the league phase, with the top eight qualifying directly for RO16.

The teams placed ninth to 24th qualified for two-legged playoffs and the winners of the playoffs joined the top-eight in the pre-quarterfinals. 

The teams placed 25th to 36th and the losing sides in the playoffs were eliminated from the competition.
