Retro: From an action story for Rajinikanth to a love story for Suriya

Retro: From an action story for Rajinikanth to a love story for Suriya

Retro director Karthik Subbaraj is actively promoting his upcoming film starring Suriya, which is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2025. During one of the promotional interviews, Karthik Subbaraj has spoken about how Retro was written as an action story for Rajinikanth, but has currently taken form as a love story for actor Suriya.

“Retro was actually written for Thalaivar (Rajinikanth) long ago. But a lot has changed since…When I wrote it for Thalaivar, Retro was in more of an action zone. I couldn’t fit a relationship in the current age group back then. So it was in a different zone. The more I wrote, the more Retro became a love story. I had a first draft ready which Suriya had listened to… He asked if it was narrated to Rajinikanth. Suriya said Retro felt like a script made for Rajinikanth”, revealed Karthik Subbaraj to Galatta Tamil.

The Retro writer, director also revealed that with Suriya on board, they made the lead character more grounded, and vulnerable without affecting the ‘mass’ or ‘action’ related to the character. Retro with Pooja Hegde playing female lead, is a joint production venture of 2D Entertainment, and Stone Bench Films.
