AFG vs ENG: Joe Root scores first ODI hundred since 2019

Joe Root scored his 17th One-Day International century during England’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against Afghanistan in Lahore on Wednesday.

This was the English batter’s first century in the 50-over format since the ODI World Cup in 2019. His last ton came against West Indies on June 14, 2019, when he scored an unbeaten 100.

Root came into bat at number four, chasing a target of 326 runs. He stitched valuable partnerships with Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler, and Jamie Overton on his way to his century.

His hundred was the 11th in this year’s Champions Trophy – the most in any edition of the tournament.

However, Root’s 120 off 111 balls couldn’t get England past Afghanistan’s total as it lost the game by eight runs and got knocked out of the race to semifinals.
