Indian boxing shake-up: 5 key questions answered in BFI elections, selection trials and IOA vs BFI power struggle

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has stepped in, appointing an ad-hoc committee to oversee the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) after its failure to conduct timely elections.

But that was just the beginning. A lot has unfolded since then — here’s a quick breakdown of the five biggest questions you need answered.

The ad-hoc committee, led by Madhu Kant Pathak, has decided to conduct BFI elections by the end of April and validate state units before appointing a returning officer.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) replaced the Ajay Singh-led BFI with an ad-hoc panel after the elections, originally scheduled for February 2, were delayed.

To prevent disruptions, the committee has assured that trials will be conducted for all future international events, allowing boxers to compete fairly. Former elite boxers may be brought in as selectors.

The Ajay Singh-headed BFI has started legal proceedings to challenge the IOA’s decision, questioning the legitimacy of the ad-hoc takeover.

IOA Treasurer Sahdev Yadav has criticized President P.T. Usha for making a unilateral decision without consulting the Executive Committee, raising governance concerns.
