PSG vs Liverpool HIGHLIGHTS, Champions League 2024-25 Round of 16: Elliott’s late goal gives Reds 1-0 win in first-leg

PSG vs Liverpool HIGHLIGHTS, Champions League 2024-25 Round of 16: Elliott’s late goal gives Reds 1-0 win in first-leg

Harvey Elliott spoils PSG’s night in front of its home fans and it is his goal which gives Liverpool a 1-0 win against the French champion in the first-leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash.

Just for context, Elliott’s goal was Liverpool’s first shot on target in the entire match. PSG, meanwhile, has had 10 and not been able to convert. It is all about taking the chances.

Five minutes added on at the end of the second-half!

Nunez does well to shield the ball and spread the ball to Elliott who came rushing in to his right. Elliott goes for a low shot which rattles the net despite Donnarumma getting a touch. It was supposed to PSG’s night but against the run of play, the Reds have taken the lead.

He came on just a minute ago, replacing Salah and what an introduction it is for the player.

Liverpool sub: IN- Elliot OUT- Salah

This time, Dembele cuts in and shoots low, aiming for the bottom left corner but Alisson comes on top yet again. How many saves has the Brazilian made tonight?

Doue cuts in and gets a shot away with lightning speed but Alisson again makes a timely dive and makes an excellent save. He should get a big shout for ‘Man of the Match’ tonight.

Liverpool sub: IN- Endo OUT- Gravenberch

PSG subs: IN- Ramos, Zaire-Emery OUT- Kvaratskhelia, Ruiz

Doue does well to draw a foul from Jones as PSG gets another freekick.

It works out a short freekick and Doue tries to get a shot away at the near-post but Alisson is alert and makes the save.

Liverpool has a chance as a ball is played over the top. Nunez, under pressure from Marquinhos, chases the ball but Donnarumma comes off his line to catch the ball. There is a collision and the ball is loose again as Nunez tries to capitalise but Marquinhis does well to prevent that from happening. Eventually the whistle goes off and PSG has a freekick. Donnarumma complains about why the foul was not given earlier and gets some medical attention.

Liverpool booking: Virgil Van Dijk sees a yellow card for time-wasting from a freekick.

Liverpool subs: IN- Jones, Nunez OUT- Diaz, Jota

PSG sub: IN- Doue OUT- Barcola

Liverpool breaks on a rare counter. It had a 4 vs 3 advantage and it was up to Mohamed Salah to find a good ball but ends up sending it straight to Donnarumma with an attempted lob.

Kvaratskhelia makes his way inside the box but goes down after a challenge from Alexander-Arnold. The PSG players immediately appeal for a penalty but the referee waves play to continue.

Kvaratskhelia cuts in and aims for the far corner with a curler but Alisson shows brilliant hands to make the save and hold onto the ball. Neves was there just in case if the rebound happened.

Kvaratskhelia puts his laces through the ball and catches his shot brilliantly from the freekick but is denied with an excellent save from Alisson. He has kept Liverpool in this tie with some incredible saves tonight.

Kvaratskhelia is fouled by Jota and another freekick for PSG in a good position. Kvaratskhelia looks like the one who would take this.

Dembele gets time and space to shoot and he does. However, the effort is disappointing and the Frenchman skies his effort.

PSG has started the second-half on the frontfoot again but not as intensely as the first-half. As the match goes on, fatigue will start to set in and mistakes are a possibility.

Scores level at 0-0 as the second-half kick-off at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

The match stays goalless as the referee blows the whistle for half-time. It was been PSg’s half and Enrique’s men would surely rue the fact that they are not in the lead by now.

Hakimi’s cross misses Barcola by an inch but Mendes does well to keep the ball in play and then make a run inside the box. He tries to set up Kvaratskhelia for a shot but the Liverpool defence gets the ball away.

Two minutes added at the end of the first-half!

Nuno Mendes’ low cross from the left reaches Marquinhos inside the box but the Brazilian fails to control it and concedes possession. Eventually the whistle goes off for offside.

Dembele takes the freekick but the wall does it job and intercepts the shot to send the ball out for a corner.

Hakimi is fouled and PSG has a freekick in a dangerous position.

Hakimi sends Dembele on the run with a good pass over the top. Dembele goes to the touchline and tries to find a teammate inside the box with a low pass but it is anticipated.

PSG booking: Marquinhos is the first player to get booked tonight as he sees a yellow for his challenge on Jota.

Kvaratskhelia dances through a crowded Liverpool box to cut in and shoot low at Alisson’s near-post but Alisson matches with an excellent save as the Brazilian gets down quickly to get a touch. Kvaratskhelia tires to capitalise from the rebound but fails to do so.

PSG makes its first mistake at the back as Liverpool looks to capitalise but the home team recovered well to soak up the pressure.

How was PSG not scored – Dembele gets the ball and makes his way inside the box. He shoots low but Alisson makes a good save. However, the danger is not yet over as PSG regains possession. Barcola has two chances to bury the ball at the back of the net but on both occasions, the Liverpool defence hang on. This might come back to hurt the French champion.

Kvaratskhelia shoots low from distance and forces a save from Alisson. However, there wasn’t any PSG player to attack on the rebound.

It remains to be seen how long PSG can keep up this intense approach but right now, Luis Enrique’s men are all over Liverpool. Arne Slot’s men are not getting any breathing space and the defence is working overtime to prevent from going behind.

VAR check complete and Konate will continue on the pitch. Not a red card for the Frenchman.

Barcola makes his way inside the Liverpool box with the ball and goes down from a Konate challenge. The challenge was outside the box so no reason for a penalty but there is a potential red card check as Barcola was the last man.

We get a clearer picture and Kvaratskhelia was offside by a heel. It cannot get narrower than that.

That is a huge dampener for PSG as the goal is ruled out for offside after a VAR check. From the looks of the initial replay, Kvaratskhelia looked to be in an onside position when he received the pass from Vitinha but the VAR team rules Kvaratskhelia to be an offside position by the narrowest of margins. Liverpool with another huge escape.

Liverpool fails to clear its lines from the corner. Vitinha has enough time to pick out Kvaratskhelia inside the box, who curls the ball into the far-corner with excellent precision.

Dembele is exuding confidence and it is evident from his latest move as he makes a penetrating run inside the attacking third and goes for a shot. The effort takes a deflection and goes out for a PSG corner.

It has been all PSG in the opening quarter and on another day, the home side would have been a goal up.

Escape for Liverpool – Dembele shows quick feet to get past Robertson and Mac Allister and then finds Neves with an excellent cutback. It should have been a simple finish for Neves but he fails to catch his shot properly as the ball takes a bobble and goes out of play.

PSG with another attack – Barcola spreads the ball to Kvaratskhelia to his left with the latter returning the favour with a cutback. Barcola looks to get a shot away from inside the box but Ryan Gravenberch makes a timely intervention to block the shot.

PSG tries to stitch a patient attack but loses momentum when Mendes runs the ball out of play after failing to control it after receiving an ae pass.

Liverpool is a little careless in possession, which allows Bradley Barcola to get the ball in the attacking third. He makes his way inside the box and shoots low but sees his effort blocked by Konate. Fabian Ruiz has a chance on the rebound but he drags his effort wide.

Jota tries to find some space in the final third as he makes his way inside the PSG box from the left but meets the solid presence of Marquinhos who snatches the ball away from the Portuguese.

PSG has made the brighter start as the French champion look to attack from the flanks but Liverpool has soaked the attacking moves in these opening minutes.

The first-half of the Champions League 2024-25 Round of 16 first-leg clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool is underway at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

PSG hosts Liverpool in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League 2024-25 Round of 16 clash at the Parc des Princes stadium on Wednesday (Thursday according to IST).

PSG had a struggling start to the season but found its stride in late 2024 to win 18 of its last 20 competitive matches, having drawn the other two.

The French side has also scored 21 goals in its last four games and qualified through the Champions League playoffs with a 10-0 aggregate victory against fellow Ligue 1 club Stade Brestois.

In Liverpool, however, it takes on one of the most formidable teams in Europe, which is for PSG coach Luis Enrique a ‘source of motivation’.
