Why Chido Obi will miss Manchester United’s Europa League knockout fixtures

Manchester United will be without its young forward Chido Obi in the knockout stage of the Europa League, which begins with a round of 16 clash against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

The 17-year-old is ineligible to participate as Manchester United failed to register him in its Europa League squad after the group stage, having not considered him a first-team prospect at the time.

However, Obi has impressed under manager Ruben Amorim, making the first of his three senior appearances over the past month, including a promising outing in the FA Cup match against Fulham. His rapid promotion has also been driven by an injury crisis that has engulfed the Red Devils in recent weeks.

The Danish striker is also ineligible for the squad’s B-list for the Europa League, which is usually reserved for young players, as UEFA regulations require such players to have been at the club for at least two years.

Obi made the switch from Arsenal to Manchester United only in September last year.
