WPL 2025 Final Highlights, MI vs DC: Mumbai Indians beats Delhi Capitals by eight runs to lift second title

Sciver-Brunt with the last over. Niki takes a single. Charani pulls out of the delivery in the last moment as Sciver-Brunt smiles it off. Mind games? Charani takes a single, Niki back on strike. A dot ball. 11 runs needed off two balls. 10 off the last ball. All but the title for MI now! AND MUMBAI INDIANS HAS WON THE WPL 2025 TITLE! Harmanpreet Kaur says a little prayer as her side beats Delhi Capitals by eight runs!

Matthews bowling out. Niki takes a single. OUT! Minnu holes out to fellow Malayali Sajana Sajeevan and that’s DC’s ninth wicket!

Minnu 4 (2) c Sajana b Matthews

N. Charani swings and misses. SIX! NIKI HITS IT OVER MID-WICKET AND EVEN MATTHEWS CAN’T BELIEVE IT! She takes a single, and 14 needed off the last over.

Sciver-Brunt with her third over. A single, Niki takes strike now. Another single, Kapp takes the strike. The South African batter smacks it straight down but Sciver-Brunt gets a hand to it to keep it to a dot. OUT! HUGE WICKET! Kapp goes for the big one but only finds Matthews at long off.

Kapp 40 (26) c Matthews b Sciver-Brunt

And another OUT! Shikha Pandey tries to swing it through the leg side and the ball rattles her stumps!

Shikha 0 (1) b Sciver-Brunt

Hat-trick ball! Not only does Minnu Mani prevent Sciver-Brunt from getting three wickets in a row but she smacks it for a FOUR through mid-wicket!

Ismail bowling out. Can this be another big over or will the South African pace ace get dots? Niki takes a single, Kapp on strike. A dot ball. And another dot. That’s a leg bye and a single taken by Kapp. Niki tries to ramp it but Ismail bowls at the batter’s body, another dot. FOUR! Niki drives it between the fielders through point for a boundary!

Saika bowling out. FOUR! Kapp slams it down the ground for a boundary. Is there still a chance for DC? WHAT WAS THAT, KERR?! The Kiwi star takes a one-handed catch off a powerful Kapp strike but the New Zealand international had already stepped over the boundary rope! And Kapp backs it up with a FOUR with a powerful smack down the ground! Ismail fails to prevent the ball from touching the rope. That’s 17 runs off that over.

Kerr bowling out and first ball, it sharply turns away from Niki with Yastika stumping. It goes upstairs but the young batter has her foot grounded inside the crease. Niki sweeps to deep mid-wicket and takes two runs. Niki takes a single to keep strike.

Matthews back into the attack. That looked to get a slight edge off Niki’s bat but Yastika couldn’t take the catch. There was a stumping opportunity as well. The U-19 India captain then plays it towards mid on for a single. FOUR! Matthews bowls it down the leg side and Kapp turns and hits it past the short third fielder. And another FOUR! A punch towards mid off but the fielder is not able to stop it.

Sciver-Brunt returns. SIX! Kapp stands and sends the ball over mid-wicket for a maximum! And a FOUR from Kapp too! She pulls it to backward square leg to find the boundary. OUT! Sarah Bryce’s wicket gets sacrificed there as Kapp looks for a quick single! Sanskriti does well to throw the ball quickly to Yastika at the striker’s end.

Bryce 5 (5) run out (Sanskriti)

Niki Prasad has come out in the middle.

Saika continues. Sarah Bryce the newest batter at the crease. Six runs from the over.

Kerr continues. FOUR! Jemimah pulls it over square leg on the backfoot and a swivel as Amanjot fails to stop the ball from going over the boundary ropes. Another FOUR! This time she finds the gap between deep square leg and deep mid-wicket. Amanjot and Sciver-Brunt left spectators there. CLOSE! A wider ball from Kerr as Jemimah slashes and almost plays it onto her stumps. OUT! A leading edge spells the end of Jemimah’s knock! Kerr takes the catch off her own bowling with a diving effort!

Jemimah 30 (21) c&b Kerr

Saika continues. Marizanne Kapp on strike. She straight drives but it goes to the mid off fielder. Just five runs off it.

Kerr continues. Sciver-Brunt does well at deep square leg to save two runs off Jemimah’s powerful pull. FOUR! Jemimah finds the gap through the covers and finds the boundary.

Saika Ishaque handed the ball for her first over. Close! That’s almost right at the block hole but Jemimah navigates the ball safely. OUT! Sutherland steps out her crease and completely misses. Easy stumping for Yastika!

Sutherland 2 (5) st Yastika b Saika

Amelia Kerr brought into the attack just after the PowerPlay. AND SHE INSTANTLY STRIKES! Jonassen tries to pull it towards mid-wicket but an edge sends the ball straight up in the air. Yastika Bhatia says its mine and takes the catch.

Jonassen 13 (15) c Yastika b Kerr

Annabel Sutherland comes out to bat.

Matthews with her second over. Jonassen cuts well through point and Amanjot Kaur tries her best to keep the ball from touching the boundary ropes, but fails to keep it at bay. That’s a much-needed FOUR for DC! A misfield! Saika Ishaque cannot read the direction of the spinning ball after it bounced as it races for another FOUR to third man. Jemimah pulls a short ball which sails over the short fine leg fielder and goes for a FOUR!

Ismail with her third over. Brilliant so far by the South African pacer with two dot balls to begin the over. Almost a maiden there as Jonassen takes a single on the last ball to retain strike.

Hayley Matthews with her first over whilst donning the Purple Cap. Two new batters in Jess Jonassen and Jemimah Rodrigues out in the middle. A couple of singles so far, with a wide ball by Matthews to Jemimah. Risky run there! Jonassen sends the ball to short third man after failing to middle the ball properly. She calls for the run and Jemimah safely makes her crease.

Ismail continues. Shafali pulls a short ball but a top edge sends the ball high in the air. However, it falls in no man’s land with Sciver-Brunt chasing after the ball. The English all-rounder does well to save a couple of runs. OUT! Shafali tries to play it towards leg side but misses. The ball hits her pads, looks to be hitting in the middle stump. Huge breakthrough for Mumbai Indians!

Shafali 4 (9) lbw Ismail

Nat Sciver-Brunt with her first over. Lanning pushes the ball to point for a single. Shafali with a flick to the leg side for another single. Perhaps a cautious start by the DC batters? Shorter ball and Lanning hammers it with a strong pull to backward square leg for a FOUR! OUT! Next ball, Sciver-Brunt unleashes an off cutter which castles Lanning’s stumps.

Lanning 13 (9) b Sciver-Brunt

Shabnim Ismail opening bowling for Mumbai Indians. Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma opening for Delhi Capitals. FOUR! Lanning tries to drive through covers but a fortunate edge helps the ball go to third man for a boundary. Shafali with a strong bat, defending against Ismail’s delivery. Just six runs from the first over.

The South African pacer with Indian ancestry – who bowled the fastest recorded delivery in the women’s game in a Women’s Premier League last season – has been a force to reckon with on the international stage and in franchise cricket.

Her raw pace and ability to swing the ball early have now helped Mumbai Indians make its second final in three seasons of the WPL.

Read Lavanya Lakshmi Narayan’s story on the veteran:

Shikha to bowl the final over. Starts with a dot. FOUR! Sanskriti takes a big swing at it and it takes one bounce over deep sweeper cover fence. Quick running by the batters who make use of the overthrow. Amanjot on strike now. FOUR! Kapp manages to stop the ball before the ropes but cannot get back into the field to stop the ball from touching the cushions. One ball remains. 149 on the board, 150 to win.

SIX! Kamalini too can play the big shots! Enough power on the swipe to get it over deep midwicket. Tight fielding keeps them to singles. Kamalini at the striker’s end and that’s OUT! She stepped out and tried to play a big shot but was beaten by the ball. Sarah Bryce is quick to take the bails off.

G Kamalini st †Bryce b Shree Charani 10 (7)

Sanskriti Gupta is off the mark with a single. FOUR! Amanjot lofts the ball over Shafali at mid off to find the fence.

OUT! It’s the big wicket of Harmanpreet and Sutherland strikes! Looks to go inside out but finds the deep sweeper cover fielder. Not the cleanest of catches but Kapp manages to hold on to the ball.

Harmanpreet Kaur c Kapp b Sutherland 66 (44)

Amanjot Kaur is off the mark with a glance down fine for two. A couple of singles taken. Kamalini almost lost her wicket with a heave into the off side but the ball landed safe. Restricts the batters to singles. A huge over for DC.

Charani continues. Harmanpreet punches towards deep cover for a run. Young Kamalini on strike. Off the mark with a cheeky single past the bowler to get off the mark. The slow fielding allows a second to be run, Kamalini shared back to the bowler’s end. A single again and she’s back on strike.

Jonassen to Harmanpreet, SIX! Gets down on one knee and hammers it over deep square leg. Tries to reverse sweep but misses, one bye. OUT! Kerr throws her wicket away, holes out straight to SHafali at mid off. Wickets are starting to tumble at the other end.

Amelia Kerr c Shafali Verma b Jonassen 2 (3)

S Sajana lasts only two balls, OUT! Trapped in front and umpire is convinced. Harmanpreet is the one who asks for the review but it goes in vain. Umpire’s call stands and that’s two wickets in the over.

Sajeevan Sajana lbw b Jonassen 0 (2)

Charani returns. FOUR! Drifitng down leg and NSB pulls it down to deep square leg fence. Lofted up high but not enough pace on it. Lands safe. Harmanpreet on strike, worked away for a single. Wide and runs away to the boundary line, free runs only helping MII. Team 100 up. OUT! Probably the most uncharacteristic way for NSB to walk back! Great catch by Minnu at square leg to put an end to a dangerous partnership. Charani picks up a crucial wicket.

Nat Sciver-Brunt c Mani b Shree Charani 30 (28)

Amelia Kerr is the new batter, off the mark and retains strike.

Sutherland continues. Swing and a miss for NSB. That’s three dots this over in as many balls. Make that four in four. Whacks it into the deep midwicket and a fit to continue Harmanpreet is back on strike. FOUR! Full toss and put away with ease. Harmanpreet pounds it to deep cover ropes.

Timeout, and this time DC will have plenty to ponder on.

Minnu Mani into the attack. FOUR! Harmanpreet is in full control! Finds the gap between deep mid wicket and deep square leg. And again! FOUR to bring up her 50! Pierces the space between deep midwicket and long on. A couple of singles and a dot to end the over.

Looks like Haramanpreet had to get treated for a case of cramps between the over, hence the delay.

Shikha welcomed back with a FOUR! Timed to perfection and lofted over extra cover. Goes the same way again but fielder in the deep collects the ball, single taken. NSB diligently takes a single on the next and the skipper is back on strike. Another big swing at it but deep point fielder keeps it to one. FOUR to end the over! NSB punishes the full toss behind extra cover.

Jonassen back. Squeezing Harmanpreet for space. But the skipper rocks back to free up her arms and slice it past point for FOUR! Tossed up wide and lofted over extra cover for another FOUR! Make that three-in-a-row! Targets an empty deep cover region and fielder cannot get to it. Big over for MI, 13 runs again.

SIX! Have the batters had enough of the singles game? Harmanpreet with great wrist work to launch one over deep backward square leg ropes for the first maximum. A midfield at backward points lets them take a single. One more single and skipper back on strike. FOUR! Harmanpreet with a cracking drive between mid off and extra cover. 13 runs off the over.

N Charani handed the ball. NSB finds one run at long on. Harmanpreet gives back strike to NSB who finds a FOUR! Holds the posture firm after slicing it towards backward point. The easy singles look a bit more difficult now. NSB having to stretch and dive to save herself from Jemimah’s lethal throw. FOUR to end the over! Lofted over covers to the ropes.

Jess Jonassen into the attack. Harmanpreet paddles it low, towards deep backward square leg for a run. NSB knocks one to long on and Harmanpreet goes the same way again. Still just a single. NSB drives towards deep mid wicket. Two more singles and that’s six runs run.

That’s 500 WPL runs this season for NSB!

Kapp to bowl out. NSB cannot get past Sutherland at mid-on who dives to her right and doesn’t allow more than a single. Harmanpreet drives towards extra cover for a single. NSB has to stay firm in her crease at the end of the over.

Timeout.

Annabel Sutherland replaces Shikha. Harmanpreet unable to get off strike . Struck high on the pads but looked like it was going down leg. FOUR! Short and wide, gets on top of the ball and punches it through point. A boundary and a wide off the over to end the PowerPlay.

The second lowest PowerPlay total for MI.. 20 runs

FOUR! Over the top, and Yastika makes use of the outside off line to cover ropes. OUT! Kapp does it again! Yastika tries to go over covers but couldn’t get under it. Jemimah Rodrigues lunges forward to complete a safe catch at cover.

Yastika Bhatia c Rodrigues b Kapp 8 (14)

Harmanpreet Kaur walks in. Off the mark with a nervy single.

Shikha continues. Yastika cuts towards deep point for a single. Full toss to new batter Nat Sciver-Brunt, who pounds it to mid on for a run. Off the mark. Yastika cuts into the cover region for one. NSB runs two on the last ball and she becomes the first batter in WPL history to get to 1000 runs! What a season for the MI all-rounder!

Kapp continues. Matthews gets the ball to glide to deep backward point for a single. Tries to drive down straight but the field was tightly set in place. WAS THAT A CHANCE? Comes back straight at Kapp who gets a hand on it but couldn’t hold on. They take a single. OUT! Kapp strangles and strikes early for DC! That stump-line being the crucial factor, as she castles Matthews. Just an inside edge that takes the bails off.

Hayley Matthews b Kapp 3 (10)

Shikha Pandey from the other end. Getting the ball to swing inwards immediately. Making Matthews crunch for space. Works it to mid wicket for one run. Pitched on leg and shapes away from Yastika’s bat. She cannot find a run beyond and that’s a one-run over.

Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia open for MI. Marizanne Kapp to start the proceedings. Yastike faces the first ball, dabs it into the on side. Puts the second one away to deep backward square leg for a single to get off the mark. Gets the ball to just shape away from Matthews who watches it go by. Drifting back into the stump line and Matthews forced to defend. Well stopped by the cover field to save three.

Both teams have made it out to the field for the national anthem.

Meg Lanning’s tenacity and the superior skill of her teams have allowed her to lift an enviable number of trophies as an international cricketer. It remains to be seen if that success translates to the Delhi Capitals, on the third try no less.

Read Lavanya Lakshmi Narayanan’s piece on how the former Australian skipper’s fortunes in franchise cricket have not been the same:

Meg Lanning: We’ve had some time off to refresh and we’re excited about tonight. It’s an opportunity for us. Need to play well and hopefully it’s our best performance.

Harmanpreet Kaur: Staying balanced and staying in the moment has worked for us. The last week has gone well for us. Today is a new day, a beautiful day and we want to enjoy our cricket.

In the WPL league stage, Delhi Capitals enjoys a 4-2 head-to-head record over the Mumbai Indians.

However, in the all-important final back in 2023, it was MI which came out on top to claim the inaugural title.

A little windy and there were a few clouds overhead. Cooler temps.

Square boundaries – 55m to one side, 56m to the other, with 69m straight down.

A fresh surface, dry but well-rolled hard pitch, says Mithali Raj.

Dew might not be as prevalent as it was in the last game at this venue, with some early help for the seamers.

Hayley (17 wickets) and Kerr (16 wickets), the highest wicket-takers in the WPL, have been impressive in the way they have operated and controlled the middle phase of the game.

Will they dominate this time around as well?

The battle between the duo of Shikha Pandey and Marizanne Kapp against MI’s top order (Yastika Bhatia, Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt) has had a huge impact over the year in the WPL.

Will we witness the same today as well?

Lanning is known for her starts and the foundation she lays for her side. Ismail has been the go to bowler to provide breakthroughs in all facets of the game.

Ismail has dismissed Lanning twice in the WPL.

Who will end the game on top?

This isn’t the first time MI and DC meet in the summit clash.

They faced each other in the WPL 2023 final after DC topped the standings and MI beat UP Warriorz in the Eliminator to take the other spot.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Meg Lanning have been a part of some legendary duels on the international stage. India and Australia have always kept each other on their toes, as have these two captains.

A fresh chapter gets added to this rivalry as Harmanpreet’s Mumbai Indians and Lanning-led Delhi Capitals clash in their second Women’s Premier League final in three seasons.
