Anahat Singh on cloud nine after her biggest PSA title at SRFI Indian Tour Championship

Winning the SRFI Indian Tour Squash Championship here on Friday, Anahat Singh expressed her happiness at having won the title in the biggest PSA event she’s ever played.

“This is the biggest PSA (event) I’ve played. It’s a $15k event. And I’m really happy that I was able to win it as well. I’ve worked hard for this. It was really important for me to win this tournament.

“It really boosts my ranking, because it’s a big tournament. And that in turn will help me play a lot of the bigger tournaments as well. My aim is to get into the top-50 (in the PSA rankings, currently 82nd) and then slowly into the top-20,” she said.

The 17-year-old has had Indian squash icon Saurav Ghosal as her mentor for around a year now. Speaking about his impact on her squash, she said: “He’s there more like outside court. He’s telling me what tournaments to play and how to go on with my training.

“Before Saurav was there, we were like without a thought – playing every single tournament and not having a clear structure as to what I should be playing. But I think in the last one year, he told me not to go so much for the junior tournaments, which aren’t as important right now. Because, the under-19 (circuit) isn’t as important in my PSA (career). So, I think I’ve slowed down a lot on that.”

She expressed her desire to do well in the even bigger JSW Indian Open, a PSA World Tour Copper event, set to get underway in Mumbai on March 24.
