IOC president elections 2025: All you need to know; 7 candidates, election process, when will results be announced
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is set to have a new president, the 10th leader in its 131-year history after one of the most open Olympic elections in decades.
Seven candidates are on the ballot, competing for the top spot at the 144th IOC Session held from March 18 to 21 in Greece at a resort hotel near the site of Ancient Olympia.
The winner, who will succeed Thomas Bach, is set to receive an eight-year mandate with key issues including steering the Olympics on a smooth path in politics and sports toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Another important subject matter will be picking a host for the 2036 edition, which could go to India or the Middle East for the first time.
Nearly 100 eligible IOC members will be involved in the voting process. The voters in the exclusive invited club of IOC members include royal family members, former lawmakers and diplomats, business leaders, sports officials and Olympic athletes. Even an Oscar-winning actress, Michelle Yeoh, will take part.
The voting for the IOC president post is scheduled to start at 1400 GMT (7:30 PM IST).
The result is expected to be known within 30 minutes after the voting process. An absolute majority is needed for victory.
