Ravichandran Ashwin to have street named after him in Chennai

Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is set to have a street named after him in his hometown Chennai.

With this, Ashwin will join the club of sportspersons such as PR Sreejesh and Anil Kumble who have received the same honour in their respective native places.

The Greater Chennai Corporation on Friday proposed to rename Ramakrishnapuram street to ‘Ravichandran Ashwin Street’ in Div 134, Kodambakkam Zone, during a council meeting presided over by Mayor R. Priya for Budget 2025.

The decision to rename the street was based on a request received from Carrom Ball Event & Marketing Pvt. Ltd., whose Chief Operating Officer, S. Karthik highlighted Ashwin’s 

The 38-year-old Ashwin retired from international cricket after the Brisbane Test during India’s recent tour of Australia. He will, however, continue to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being picked by five-time champion Chennai Super Kings during the auction ahead of the upcoming season.

Ashwin picked up 765 wickets in international cricket. He is the second-highest wicket taker in Tests for India with 537 scalps. He also scored six centuries in the red-ball format.

Ashwin was also a part of the Indian squad which won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
