Thiago Almada scored the winning goal for Argentina as it beat Uruguay 1-0 in the South American FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match at Centenario Stadium in Uruguay on Friday.
The 24-year-old, who plays for Ligue 1 club Lyon, got on the scoresheet with a powerful curled shot from the edge of the box, taking the defending champion a step closer to qualification.
Almada was a member of the Argentina team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He was officially called up to the squad to replace injured Joaquin Correa, five days before Argentina’s first game of the tournament.
His first international appearance for Argentina came during a friendly match against Honduras in September 2022. He made his World Cup debut in La Albiceleste’s final group-stage game against Poland, coming on as a substitute.
He made history by becoming the first active Major League Soccer (MLS) player to win the tournament, while he was representing Atlanta United.
After spending two years with Atlanta, he moved to Botafogo in 2024 for a record deal of 21 million dollars (19.5 million euros) plus add-ons, breaking the transfer record both for the MLS and the Brazilian league.
He won the 2024 Copa Libertadores with the Brazil Serie A side, before joining Ligue 1’s Lyon on a loan deal till June 2025.
