Why was Congo vs Zambia cancelled in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers?
The Republic of Congo would have hoped to turn the tide in its FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign against Zambia in their match on March 22.
Congo, which has lost all three of its games so far in the campaign, is at the bottom of Group E. It lost 0-1 to Uganda before losing 2-3 to South Sudan.
Zambia, on the other hand, has been in flying form, with four wins and a draw in its last five competitive games. However, the Copper Bullets have just one win in four games in the current round’s qualification campaign.
However, the match between Zambia and Congo, scheduled on Saturday, was cancelled.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier between Congo and Zambia was cancelled because FIFA suspended the host, Congo, earlier this year.
FIFA, in consultation with Africa’s football governing body, suspended Congo due to third-party interference on February 7, 2025.
The global football body said that the Central African nation’s federation violated its obligations under FIFA’s rules. Congo denies this.
FIFA said the suspension would only be lifted if a number of conditions were met, including the return of full control of the federation’s headquarters and other facilities to the national football federation FECOFOOT.
