Indian sports wrap, April 25: Gold rush for Rashmika in KSS Shooting Championship; Pai wins round 1 of CCI Billiards Classic

Rashmika Sahgal swept the women’s, juniors and youth air pistol gold medals in the 23rd Kumar Surendra Singh Shooting Chamiponship at the Madhya Pradesh Academy on Friday.

Rashmika beat Sakshi by one point for the women’s gold, when the seasoned D Padma of Railways climbed to the bronze.

In juniors, Rashmika shot the best final of 243.2 and beat Anjali Shekhawat by 3.8 points.

Rashmika won the youth gold with 240.6, beating qualification topper Chahek (581) by 5.4 points.

Meanwhile, in the 50-metre rifle 3-position event at the Dr. Karni Singh Range in Tughlakabad, Akhil Sheoran won the gold with a five-point margin over Rohit Kanyan. Qualification topper, Olympic medallist Swapnil Kusale (589) placed fifth.

Khushi Chand and Tikam Singh were among the Indians boxers who reached the semifinals of the Asian U-15 & U-17 Championships in Amman, Jordan.

Khushi (46 kg), a bronze-medallist at the 2024 Asian School Boys & Girls Boxing Championship in Abu Dhabi, forced an early end to her quarterfinal bout against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Hong Yen after out-boxing her.

Tikam (52 kg) got the better of Palestine’s Othman Diab in his last-eight contest, which also ended early.

In the men’s section, Ambekar Meetei (48 kg), Udham Singh (54 kg), and Rahul Gariya (57 kg) won by unanimous 5-0 decisions, while Aman Dev (50 kg) edged past Jordan’s Osamah Al-Khaldi 3-2 in a tight bout.

Jiya (48 kg) defeated Vietnam’s Thi Ru Na Dinh for a 5-0 win while Jannat (54 kg) overpowered Ukraine’s Anhelina Rumiantseva 4-1.

Bihar defeated defending champion Odisha (21-12) to be crowned champion of the 12th Senior National Rugby 7s Championship (Women).

This marked Bihar’s second national championship, having won it earlier in 2022 on home soil. The battle for bronze also saw a closely fought contest with Maharashtra defeating Delhi 14-5.

Sunita Hansdah of Odisha emerged as the top scorer of the competition with 13 tries, with Anshu Kumari & Arti Kumari from Bihar close behind at 12 tries.

Reigning National Champion Karna Kadur and Musa Sherif of Arka Motorsports set the quickest time in the Super Special Stage of the Asia Cup leg of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship, which got underway at the Madras International Circuit.

Bengaluru’s Kadur with experienced co-driver Sherif of Kerala clocked the fastest combined time of two minutes and 50.9 seconds for the two loops of a 1.45-km gravel stage, where two cars begin simultaneously to provide a vantage view for the spectators.

Ammittrajit Ghosh along with Ashwin Naik set the pace after the first lap to top table but Karna Kadur responded with a blistering 1min, 24.4sec, lap in his second loop to become the quickest driver of the day.

Jason Saldanha and PV Srinivasa Murthy finished the day in second place, while Ghosh and Naik had to be content with third place after the Super Special on Day 1.

Qualifier Ranjhana Sangram beat Shagun Kumari 6-4, 6-3 to set up a title clash against Nianika Bendram in the AITA National series junior tennis tournament at the ClTA Complex on Friday.

The boys’ final will be between top seed Swaraaj Dhamdhere and Ribhav Saroha.

Jensi Kanabar beat Nualsri Paweenon of Thailand 6-1, 7-5 in the girls quarterfinals of the Asian under-14 Development tennis championship at the DLTA Complex on Friday.

In the semifinals, Jensi will play Sun Jiarui of China. Srishti Kiran will play top seed Lim Yerlin of Korea in the other semifinal.

Zeel Desai beat Lidia Encheva of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the USD 15,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Monastir, Tunisia, on Friday.

Vaishnavi Adkar also made the singles semifinals of the ITF women’s event in Antalya, Turkey, and will play the top seed Yuki Naito of Japan.

Aryan Shah retired midway through the second set against third seed Michael Geerts of Belgium in the Challenger quarterfinals in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Roundglass has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hockey Punjab to support the revival of the game in the State.

Through the sponsorship, Roundglass will provide comprehensive support across sporting and operational domains, focusing on infrastructure, grassroots development, talent identification and holistic athlete wellness.

The sporting side will be led by technical director, Dronacharya awardee Rajinder Singh, and the operational management will be done by Ashfaque Ullah Khan.

Rohan Pai constructed a century break of 120 to defeat Sachin Lokare 480-150 in the first round qualifying match of the CCI Billiards Classic here on Friday.

Besides his huge effort, Pai also had three substantial breaks of 50, 54 and 53, ensuring his comfortable victory.

Tataya Sachdev overcame Mehul Sutaria 485-143. Sachdev had two sizeable breaks of 61 and 66, which ensured his win.

In another match, Akshay Gogri prevailed over Carl Serrao, recording a 299-230 victory. Gogri produced two good breaks of 56 and 54 which helped him come through.
