Indian sports wrap, May 14: Zara moves up in Japan golf tournament

Zara Anand continued to be the best Indian on show after two rounds of the 45th Queen Sirikit Cup, shooting 1-under 71 on Wednesday to be tied-10th in the individual event in Japan on Wednesday.

Mannat Brar, who shot 2-under 70, had the best second round among the three Indians competing in the tournament.

Zara (73-71) moved from T-12 to T-10 with a two-day aggregate of even-par 144, while Mannat (77-70) rose from T-25 to T-15.

The third Indian, Heena Kang (76-76) is placed tied 28th.

As a team, the Indians are lying fifth, two places up from the first round.

Iha Joshi beat third seed Angel Patel 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 in the girls pre-quarterfinals of the ITF junior tennis tournament at the Vijayant Khand Stadium courts on Wednesday.

In the quarterfinals, Iha will play eighth seed Karthika Padmakumar.

Australia beat India 3-0 to top the group in the Asia-Oceania Junior Billie Jean King Cup under-16 girls tennis tournament in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday.

The Indian girls will take on host Kazakhstan, which topped its group by beating the second seed China 2-1.

In other quarterfinals, Australia will play China, New Zealand will meet Japan and Chinese Taipei will challenge Korea.

The semifinalists will qualify for the World Group stage.

Sriram Balaji, in partnership with Miguel Reyes-Varela of Mexico, recovered from the brink of defeat to beat Robert Cash and JJ Tracy of USA 6-7(7), 7-6(7), [10-6] in the doubles pre-quarterfinals of the $227,270 Challenger tennis tournament on clay inn Bordeaux, France, on Wednesday.

Over 120 cyclists from 20 States are set to participate in 12th edition of MTB Shimla, India’s premier mountain biking challenge held over three days and spread across 120 kilometres.

The event, being organised by Himalayan Adventure Sports and Tourism Promotion Association (HASTPA), in association with Himachal Tourism, Government of Himachal Pradesh and Cycling Association of Himachal Pradesh, will be held from May 16 to 18.

Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will flag off the rally from the historic Ridge on May 16.

The main highlight of the event would be a 20-kilometre heritage ride through the main town of Shimla on May 16, demonstrating the rich culture, panoramic beauty and history to the world.

A large number of youth and school children have been invited to join the event, a statement issued on Wednesday said.

The trail, designed to test endurance and skill, features jeep tracks, meadows, and cross-country routes and the participants would ride through breathtaking landscapes of the Kufri-Chail Wildlife Sanctuary and the Potters hill Glen Reserve Forest, said Mohit Sood, president of HASTPA.

Punjab FC dished out a dominant display as it clinched the AIFF U-17 Elite Youth League title after defeating Jamshedpur FC 4-1 in Guwahati on Wednesday.

A superior first-half show saw Punjab surge ahead 4-0 at the break through goals from Karish Soram (28th minute), Ashish Lohar (34th), Vikash Kisku (37th) and Usham Thoungamba Singh (39th).

Heerangamba Seram (84th) pulled one back for Jamshedpur FC late in the match.
