ISL 2025-26: Punjab FC signs Jamshedpur FC full-back Muhammed Uvais on free transfer
Punjab FC has completed the signing of Jamshedpur FC left-back Muhammed Uvais on a multi-year contract. He becomes one of the Indian Super League (ISL) club’s earliest acquisitions ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Uvais made 34 appearances for Jamshedpur FC last season as the Men of Steel reached both the ISL Cup semifinal and the Super Cup final. With his contract expiring this month, the 26-year-old opted not to extend his stay.
An I-League winner with Gokulam Kerala in 2022, Uvais joined Jamshedpur in 2023. Standing at 187 cm, his height gave him a clear aerial advantage, which, combined with his long passing ability, made him a key member of Jamshedpur’s starting XI.
Over three seasons, he made 56 appearances for the club, providing four assists. His only goal came in a crucial league-stage match against Bengaluru FC, earning Jamshedpur two points that would prove vital in securing a top-six finish in the 2024–25 season.
Uvais’ arrival could pose a challenge for Abhishek Tekcham Singh, who started 27 games as a full-back for Punjab last season. The 20-year-old, under contract until 2026, has reportedly been in talks with East Bengal, though one early offer has already been turned down.
Abhishek recently made his international debut in a friendly against the Maldives. Punjab may consider letting him go if a suitable offer is presented.
Meanwhile, another potential transfer to East Bengal is in play, with Nikhil Prabhu entering the final year of his contract at the New Delhi-based club. The 24-year-old defender played 27 times for Punjab this season after joining from FC Goa in 2023.
His move could depend on playing time at East Bengal, particularly the future of Jeakson Singh’s role in the first team.
Jeakson, who moved to East Bengal last year shortly before the coaching change from Carles Cuadrat to Óscar Bruzón, remains uncertain about his position heading into next season.
If Jeakson were to leave after just one year, Prabhu could become part of East Bengal’s plans.
