Super Cup 2025: Mumbai City FC thrashes Chennaiyin 4-0 to book quarterfinal spot

Mumbai City FC defeated Chennaiyin FC 4-0 in the Kalinga Super Cup 2025, round-of-16 match at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar on Wednesday.

The Marina Machans battled hard across both halves, but failed to take advantage of of their chances and conceded late goals against the run of play.

A frenetic start saw Elsinho lunge in for an important interception seconds after kick-off, before the referee waved off strong appeals by the Marina Machans for a handball inside the opposition box.

Nikolaos Karelis put Mumbai ahead with a 43rd-minute header. Despite a spirited start to the second half, Chennaiyin was denied an equaliser in the 48th minute as Lucas Brambilla and Jordan Gill had consecutive attempts cleared off the line.

Chennaiyin kept the intensity high throughout its search for the equaliser. Irfan tested the Odisha goalkeeper with a headed attempt from a corner, while Jordan’s acrobatic effort flew over the bar minutes after.

The Marina Machans had another appeal for a handball inside the box waved off at the hour mark.

Mumbai, then, added to its lead against the run of play through Lallianzuala Chhangte.

The 27-year-old then scored a third for Mumbai late on, before Bipin Singh put the game to bed with the Islanders’ fourth of the night.
