World Archery set to propose reduction in teams to eight in LA28 Olympics
World Archery will propose the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reduce the number of recurve teams from 12 to eight in order to facilitate compound archery’s debut in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Compound archery, which got the go-ahead for the Olympics last month, would have 12 mixed teams (including 24 athletes) in LA28, said a WA write-up on Friday.
Despite the addition of a new bow style and an additional event to the existing five recurve competitions (including two individual and three team events), the total number of quota places will remain unchanged at 128 (64 men and 64 women).
The reduction of recurve team quota places will “open individual slots to a wider range of nations and protect the universality of the competition” in the Olympics.
According to WA secretary-general Tom Dielen, an adjustment was necessary to ensure as many countries as possible still had an opportunity to compete.
