Emi Martinez gets red card in Manchester United vs Aston Villa, sets forgettable record
Emiliano Martinez became the first goalkeeper to be sent off in the Premier League this season when he was penalised for pushing Rasmus Hojlund outside in the match between Aston Villa and Manchester United on Sunday.
As United tried to attack on the break in first-half stoppage time, Hojlund ran into the final third when he was pushed down by the Argentine goalie, Martinez, prompting referee Thomas Bramall brandish a straight red card.
With the offence, Martinez became the first goalkeeper since 2003-04 to make five saves and get sent off in the first half of a Premier League game, according to Opta.
Martinez, who won the FIFA World Cup three years ago, has been a mainstay in Unai Emery’s side, playing every match in the Premier League this season.
However, with his contract set to expire this summer, he is rumoured to leave the club on a free transfer.
