India squad for Test tour of England: Shami misses out

Pacer Mohammed Shami was not picked in India’s squad for the five-match Test series against England, which begins from June 20 at Headingley.

Shami, whose last Test was the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June 2023, made a comeback to the national side earlier this year after undergoing an ankle surgery in February 2024.

However, towards the end of his recovery, Shami had started experiencing pain in his right knee, which ruled him out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia and has also prevented him from increasing his workload.

“Shami has had some struggles and it is hard when you miss someone like him. But when he is not fully fit have to look past at someone,” Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of senior men’s selection committee, said.

After returning from a prolonged injury lay-off, Shami featured in the T20Is and ODIs at home against England earlier this year before featuring in all of India’s ICC Champions Trophy matches. He picked nine wickets in five games, and also claimed a fifer against Bangladesh, during India’s victorious campaign.

Shami has been part of India’s last three Test tours of England, in 2014, 2018 and 2021. His most successful series in England was in 2018, where he picked 16 wickets in five games.

Overall, in 14 Tests in England, Shami has claimed 42 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 40.50.
