India to host 2026 BWF World Championships in New Delhi
The next edition of the World badminton championship will be staged in Delhi in August 2026.
The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the current World Championship in Paris, in which Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the doubles bronze, their second in the championship.
Thanking the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for bestowing the honour of hosting the World Championship on India, the general secretary of Badminton Association of India (BAI), Sanjay Mishra said, “We assure that India will uphold and carry forward the same standards of excellence and grandeur that Paris has showcased. We look forward to welcoming the badminton family to Delhi”.
India has won 15 medals in the World Championship and five of them have been by the golden girl PV Sindhu. The double Olympic medallist, Sindhu has won a gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the World Championship. Saina Nehwal also won two bronze medals.
Kidambi Srikanth won the silver in 2021, while bronze medals have been won by Sai Praneeth, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy in recent years, after Prakash Padukone had opened the account in 1983 with the bronze in Copenhagen .
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa had won the women’s doubles bronze in 2011.
