Sandesh Jhingan to miss rest of CAFA Nations Cup due to injury

Sandesh Jhingan to miss rest of CAFA Nations Cup due to injury

Indian men’s football team defender Sandesh Jhingan has been ruled out of the side’s remaining CAFA Nations Cup matches due to an injury, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced on Wednesday.

According to a post on social media, the 32-year-old suffered an injury during India’s 0-3 loss against Iran in its second match of the tournament at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan.

“He will return to India today,” the post added.

The tournament is newly-appointed head coach Khalid Jamil’s first assignment, and Jhingan was a crucial part of the setup, scoring the winning goal against Tajikistan in the opener.

Despite the heavy loss against Iran, India remains second in its group and is still in contention to secure a spot in the third-place match if it holds its position. The Blue Tigers will face bottom-placed Afghanistan on Thursday in their final group fixture.

The tournament, comprising mostly of Central Asian countries, is vital for India as it prepares for the Asian Cup qualifying round matches against Singapore on October 9 and 14.
