Transfer deadline day: Major signings in La Liga summer transfer window
The summer transfer window in Europe for the 2025-26 season finally came to an end at 7 pm BST (11:30 pm IST) on September 1, with deals being completed right upto the deadline.
La Liga was the second biggest spender out of Europe’s top five leagues with €298 million splashed out in the summer.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s switch to Real Madrid was one of the most talked-about moves of last season, with the club reportedly paying £10 million to Liverpool to secure his services ahead of the Club World Cup in June. However, with veteran Dani Carvajal returning from a long-term injury, Alexander-Arnold now faces a battle to cement his place in the starting XI.
Marcus Rashford’s resurgence in the second half of last season with Aston Villa earned him a year-long loan move to reigning La Liga champion Barcelona this summer. With Robert Lewandowski still recovering from injury, Rashford could be handed the chance to lead the line in the veteran’s absence or make a decisive impact off the bench.
A key factor in Bournemouth’s success last season was the partnership of centre-backs Ilya Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen, with the latter attracting the attention of Spanish giant Real Madrid. Much like Trent Alexander-Arnold, the 20-year-old was signed before the Club World Cup after Madrid activated his £50 million release clause, and he has since quickly established himself in the team.
Atletico Madrid emerged as La Liga’s biggest spender this summer with an outlay of €176 million, a large portion of which went toward signing Alex Baena from Villarreal. The 24-year-old Spanish midfielder registered 26 goals and 40 assists in 148 appearances for the Yellow Submarine, form that earned him a €42 million move to the capital.
Barcelona has endured its share of problems between the posts in recent seasons, with stalwart Marc-Andre ter Stegen sidelined by long-term injuries. Last year, veteran Wojciech Szczesny even came out of retirement to fill the void. Determined not to take any risks this time, the club has signed 24-year-old Joan Garcia from Espanyol. Garcia was instrumental in Espanyol’s promotion to the top flight in 2023-24 and played a key role in helping the club avoid relegation last season.
