India returns to Bengaluru after Junior Asia Cup triumph, eyes World Cup at home
The Indian men’s junior hockey team landed in Bengaluru on Thursday after it defended its Asia Cup title and continued staying the most successful team in the competition’s history with five titles.
“Our journey in the Junior Asia Cup was nothing short of extraordinary. Each match presented its own challenges, but our team’s determination and hard work shone through. Our forwards performed exceptionally well, consistently breaking down defences and creating scoring opportunities. Winning this title for the fifth time is a testament to our pursuit of excellence and the support of our incredible fans,” captain Amir Ali commented after landing.
Placed in Pool A alongside Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Chinese Taipei, India topped the group with an unbeaten record, having won all its matches while netting 38 goals and conceding just three.
In the semifinal, the Amir-led side defeated Malaysia 3-1. Araijeet Singh Hundal ended as the tournament’s second-highest scorer with 10 goals.
“Every player contributed to this remarkable victory, and our collective effort has been truly inspiring. The tough matches, especially against Japan and Pakistan, tested our mettle, but we stayed focused and executed our game plan. This is truly a proud moment for all of us, and we now look forward to the Junior World Cup in Chennai with great anticipation,” vice-captain Rohit signed off.
The side faced rival Pakistan in the summit clash and beat it 5-3 to retain the Asian crown. India head coach PR Sreejesh, not a stranger to being a champion, has been having a dream start to his stint helming the junior team.
Before conquering Asia, Sreejesh’s side clinched the bronze medal in the Sultan of Johor Cup, which was the two-time Olympic medallist’s maiden tournament as the coach.
After proving its mettle against powerhouses of Asia, the Indian colts will hope to do well in the upcoming World Cup which is set to be held in Chennai next year.
